Non contact sensors market by geography
Non-contact sensors detect changes in light or an electromagnetic field and are a special category of sensors in different types of sensors like temperature, proximity etc. These sensors need to come in contact with the measuring surface, field for registering values and are hence more reliable, easy to use and install in different products.

A non-contact sensor is a sensing device that detects the absence or presence of an object within a certain distance. It is better known as ‘Gesture Recognition’ technology which interprets human gestures to perform computational and consequent mechanical tasks, by the use of sensing technologies and mathematical algorithms. These gestures can originate from any bodily motion or state but commonly originate from the face or hand. Gesture recognition can be conducted with techniques using computer vision and image processing.

In simple words, non-contact sensors detect changes in light or an electromagnetic field within a radius. These sensors need to come in contact with the measuring surface or field for registering the values correctly, and are hence more reliable, easy to use, and can be installed in a number of products.

The non-contact sensors market has been extremely positive and stable. The durability of non-contact sensors has grown significantly in the last few years, and so has the demand for it. The market has been steadily growing at a rapid compound annual growth rate of around 6.5%. Research shows that this market should ideally cross $21 billion by 2018.

There are different types of sensors like temperature, proximity, catalytic gas sensors and so on. As mentioned previously, in the overall sensors market there has been an increasing trend toward non-contact sensing technologies, some of the end user markets are the automotive, medical, industrial and aerospace industries. Technological progress make the users seek more accurate, reliable, and durable sensors that have resulted in a steady rise in the popularity of non-contact sensors.

Although the contact sensors are slightly cheaper than the non-contact sensors, the market is inclining towards non-contact sensors because they are more durable and the technology advancements of the sensors provide accurate measurements. Whereas, contact sensors are not as durable as the non-contact sensors, in fact they wear out in a very short duration of time. Besides, non-contact sensors are also resistant to contamination. End users now know of their vast capabilities, and new research for more reliable and accurate sensors has resulted in creating smaller, cheaper and smarter sensors. This makes it very easy for the end users to apply these non-contact sensors for different purposes.

The global market for proximity sensors alone is set to grow to $5.95 billion by 2018. According to a report compiled by IndustryARC, this presents a huge growth opportunity for proximity sensor providers who are looking for new opportunities in countries other than the U.S., where the growth is almost stable in the commercial and healthcare segments. Developing countries like India are considered to be the high-growth regions which are great for investment purpose and can become a significant new market. Many companies have already capitalized in this particular market opportunity and preparing to enter this market, according to the report.
